Herbert Burns Weekend - March 23-24, 2018

Herbert Burns Weekend will recognize one of Palm Springs′ most important modernist architectural designers. The weekend includes an informative lecture, a tour, a closing cocktail reception, and publication of a PSPF tribute journal, The Design of Herbert W. Burns, authored by PSPF board member Steven Keylon. The journal represents the most comprehensive and scholarly overview of Herbert Burns' career to date, and includes hitherto unseen archival material from the Burns family.

Landscape historian and Herbert Burns tribute journal author Steven Keylon will present an informative and entertaining overview of Burns′ life and career. Burns′ fascinating life and multiple talents (from his early years as a lighting designer/fabricator, to stockbroker, to contractor, and finally to architectural designer) have earned him Keylon′s informal nickname “The Charismatic Chameleon.” Steven is a PSPF board member and president of the California Garden and Landscape History Society; a member of the Stewardship Council of The Cultural Landscape Foundation; and a board member of Docomomo US/SoCal. Following the lecture enjoy wine and light hors d′oeuvres. Ticket price includes a copy of The Design of Herbert W. Burns tribute journal.

Saturday, March 24

1-4PM   Tour                                             $ 65 [Add to Cart]

Tour the interiors of some of the few remaining residential examples of Herbert Burns′ architectural work. See how various owners have renovated their homes, either through faithfulness to the original design or with 21st‐century updating that interprets the architect′s intent. The itinerary also includes exterior tours (with access to interior courtyards and common areas) of some of Burns′ much-admired apartment hotels. Ticket price includes a copy of The Design of Herbert W. Burns tribute journal and a collectible tour map. This PSPF tribute journal is the most comprehensive and scholarly overview of Herbert Burns′ career to date. The map will also show the location of other examples of Burns' work in the Coachella Valley not on the tour.

6-8PM   Closing Cocktail Celebration   $ 75 [Add to Cart]

Join us at the Burns-designed Hideaway (originally the Town & Desert Apartments) for a glamorous cocktail party with hors d′oeuvres. Described as the “apartments of tomorrow” when it opened in 1947, the complex received national attention in the May 1948 issue of Architectural Record in an article entitled “California Hide-Away, Motel Style.” The Hideaway has become a local favorite since it′s renovation in 2002 and was designated a Class 1 Historic Site in 2014. The owners will generously allow touring of selected rooms, including Herb and Gayle′s own apartment! Members of the Burns family have been invited.

Additional instructions will be provided after ticket purchase.
